Teachers in South Wollo and North Shewa Zones have been ordered by local officials to travel to assigned schools in rural areas and other areas with security problems and to begin teaching.

Teachers have been assigned to kebeles where the federal government and Fano fighters are engaged in intense fighting and where they fear for their security. They have also been told if they fail to go to their assigned areas they will not receive their salaries. Teachers say in this situation they face a severe problem and have called on the government to give them grace until the security situation improves.

The Amhara Region Teachers Association has said they have received information regarding complaints and concerns raised by teachers and have said they will do their part to ensure educational services may resume without interference from ongoing security problems.
