VOA Amharic – Residents of North Wollo Zone say not enough assistance has reached children affected by food shortages

December 24, 2024

Voice of America

Parents, the Bugna Woreda Health Office official, and doctors told Voice of America food assistance provided for children and mothers affected by food shortages across 16 kebeles of Bugna Woreda of North Wollo Zone in Amhara Region is not enough.

As a result of fighting between government forces and Fano militants which has surpassed one year, the woreda has been under full control of Fano militants according to the Bugna Woreda Health Office head Ato Gebremeskel Alemu who said locals who relied on food assistance are facing a crisis.

Three mothers who spoke to Voice of America said that the children's food distributed since Monday, after health workers and elders helped create awareness to the children's suffering, was inadequate. They warned that if adequate aid is not distributed urgently, the severe damage to children and pregnant mothers will spread to adults.

The North Wollo Disaster Prevention Food Security Coordinating Office head Ato Alemu Yimer said following discussions held with over 18 local elders, religious leaders and health professionals from across 16 kebeles who took responsibility for the proper delivery of the aid, they have started sending aid and will continue to do so.

Among the community elders, an individual named Qes Gebreegziabher Zinabie said food relief has begun to enter following their plea to send assistance before more children die, but he said it is still not enough.
