Following the outbreak of drought in Bugna Woreda of North Wollo Zone, of more than 109,000 people said to be in need of emergency food assistance, only 27,000 have been reached so far, according to the zone’s disaster prevention and food security coordinating office.

An official from the office named Ato Alemu Yimer informed Voice of America that they told the government and aid organizations that more than 16,000 quintals of food assistance is needed in the woreda, and that only 4,000 quintals has been sent to the area from the government, while only 1,500 quintils has been received from other aid organizations. He said as a result more than 78,000 residents in the woreda are waiting for food assistance. Voice of America spoke to residents of Ayena Bugna town who said though they have traveled to the grain aid distribution site by the day they have not received any grain.

Our efforts to obtain a response from the Amhara Region Disaster Prevention and Food Security Commission and Federal Disaster Risk Management Commission were not successful.

The zonal emergency prevention and food security coordinating office informed Voice of America that yesterday, Thursday night, crops belonging to 54 farmers were burned in an area called Qechinae located in 03 Kebele of Wadila Woreda of North Wollo Zone.
