The Amhara Regional Government announces government security enforcement were likely involved in abductions and killings in Gonder city.

The Amhara Regional Government announced that government security forces were likely involved in the violence and killings in Gonder. In a statement issued yesterday, the Regional Peace and Security Bureau announced "strict measures" will be taken against individuals and entities involved in abductions and extortion of money.

In its statement, the bureau declared, "there is no positive outcome from abducting innocent citizens, extorting money, or committing killings." It also described the ongoing alarming actions in Gonder as "disturbing and part of an enemy's agenda being carried out deliberately.”

The statement held an unnamed entity, referred to as an “armed force," responsible for the crime. The Peace and Security Bureau's statement also noted that certain security forces with "ethical issues" within the government's security apparatus were implicated in the acts of extortion, killings, and money collection. According to the statement, 14 security personnel, who were found to be involved in illegal activities, have been taken into custody and are currently under investigation.

The lengthy statement further added that "the regional government is diligently working to hold accountable and remove from power the officials responsible for the developmental and administrative challenges in the zones and cities around the Gonder area, who are facing either capacity or ethical issues.”
