DW Amharic – Fighting continues in West Gojjam Zone

According to a city resident fighting took place in Finote Selam city yesterday and today government security forces were sighted near the city’s correctional facility. Despite this, gunfire exchanges were reported in the “Hod Anshi” area along the Jiga line. 


Over the past two days, fighting has taken place between government security forces and Fano fighters in various areas of West Gojjam Zone in Amhara Region according to city residents who spoke to Deutsche Welle. In some areas, fighting has slowed however sources say fighting has continued in a kebele called “Hod Anshi” located between Finote Selam and Jiga towns, and in Denbecha town. 


Over the past two days, intense fighting has taken place between government security forces and Fano militants in Jiga, Finote Selam, Denbecha and Bure towns and surrounding areas of West Gojjam zone, residents told Deutsche Welle. 


Yesterday intense fighting took place in the small town of Jiga according to a town resident who said Fano forces were operating in the area up until the time of this report at 1 pm today and added, “sounds of heavy gunfire can be heard even now in an area called ‘Hod Anshi’ located between Finote Selam and Jiga towns.” 


Yesterday fighting took place in Finote Selam city says one town resident who said today there have not been sounds of gunfire in the city. They mentioned seeing government security forces moving near the correctional facility of the city. They explained despite this there have been sounds of gunfire which confirm fighting is ongoing in the “Hod Anshi” area located on the Jiga line. 


Starting yesterday fighting between the two forces has taken place in Denbecha town of West Gojjam Zone which has continued according to a town resident who spoke at around noon. They said residents are staying in their houses and are not leaving, and said heavy gunfire could be heard as they were giving the interview. 


Yesterday gunfire could be heard around Bure town and today there has been relative stability, a town resident told Deutsche Welle. They also said burials were held yesterday for two people who were killed in the gunfire exchange. 


The Amhara Region Government Communication Affairs Bureau head Dr. Mengesha Fentaw and the National Defense Force Public Relations Head Colonel Getinet Adane recently delivered a joint statement to state media saying a law enforcement operation would continue in Amhara Region in order to “achieve lasting peace”.
